Attendance

Jeffco Transition Services’ regular school day is 8 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Monday through Thursday. JTS follows the Jeffco Public Schools calendar. This includes all non-attendance days, early dismissals and any alternate schedules. Jeffco Transition Services School will provide notice of any change to the schedule.

Jeffco’s educational program is built on the premise that regular attendance is vital to a student’s success in school. The district expects parents, guardians and students to make every effort to ensure regular attendance.

With that in mind, students should be prepared to spend the day in their community and participate in activities. Students who are not feeling well and unable to participate should stay at home.

Students who need to be excused for an absence or tardy should call 303-982-6680 or email their teacher by 8:20 a.m. on the day of the absence.

Excessive tardiness or absenteeism by a student will result in a meeting to discuss its impact on IEP goals and objectives, or possible disenrollment.

Absence Notification and Student Retention Policy

JTS is committed to the academic success and well-being of our students. Regular attendance is crucial for students to fully engage in their education and achieve their potential. The absence notification and student retention policy is designed to ensure that students attend JTS school regularly and receive the support they need to excel toward their transition goals.

JTS understands that various factors may contribute to student absenteeism. Our goal is to ensure regular attendance and also provide support and resources to help our students overcome attendance challenges. We are committed to working closely with families to foster a positive and collaborative environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.

This policy is subject to periodic review and updates to align with changing needs and legal requirements.

Absence reporting

Parents or guardians are responsible for promptly reporting their child's absence from school. Absences should be reported no later than 8:30 a.m. on the day of the absence by contacting the designated case manager through the following methods:

  • Phone: 303-982-6680
  • Email: heather.archuleta@jeffco.k12.co.us

Case manager responsibilities

Each student will be assigned a case manager responsible for monitoring their attendance and addressing any attendance-related issues.

When student absences constitute a pattern interrupting delivery of services, the case manager will make initial contact with the family to inquire about the reason for the absences.

Multiple contact attempts

In cases where initial contact is unsuccessful or when repeated absences occur without a valid reason, the case manager will make multiple attempts to reach out to the student's family. These attempts may include:

  • Phone calls
  • Emails
  • Home visits (if necessary and appropriate)
  • Letters or written communication

The case manager will maintain a record of all communication attempts.

Support and resources

If the family indicates that they are experiencing challenges related to the student's attendance, the case manager will work collaboratively with the family to identify and access appropriate support services, which may include counseling, assistance with transportation access, or referrals to community resources.

Notice of Intent to Disenroll

After exhausting all reasonable efforts to contact the family and address attendance issues, the case manager will issue a formal written notice to the family expressing our concern about the student's attendance and the potential consequences, which may include disenrollment and issuance of the student’s final transcript and high school diploma.

The notice will provide a clear timeline for the family to respond and take action to improve the student's attendance.

Disenrollment

If, after receiving the notice of intent to disenroll the family does not take steps to address the attendance issues or communicate with the school, JTS school reserves the right to disenroll the student.

Disenrollment will be considered a last resort, and every effort will be made to prevent this outcome.

Attendance in Jeffco

The importance of regular, daily school attendance as a basis for academic achievement cannot be overemphasized. Attendance is a shared responsibility of the student, the families and the school.

It is the family’s responsibility to ensure their student attends school and to notify the school when their student is absent for a legitimate reason, such as an illness or family emergency. Each family should also ensure their student’s school has their correct contact information so that the school is able to communicate about any attendance issues that may arise.
